About

On Anticosti Island, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Pourvoirie Lac Geneviève holds an exclusive 721 km² territory stretching from the north to the south of the island. Founded in 1982 and run by island residents, it is best known for its white-tailed deer hunting: every party is assigned its own exclusive sector, hunted from one of the many tree stands or along the marked trails, and the Zone 20 licence allows the harvest of two deer of any category. Three fall formulas: the American plan (all meals, guide, 4x4 truck and ATV), the European plan (guide and vehicles, self-catering) and the rustic plan, self-guided, at the Lac Valiquette camp on an exclusive 17 km² sector. Small-game hunting — ruffed grouse, spruce grouse, snowshoe hare — is added in season. In summer, from mid-June to late August, the island turns to holidaymaking: 4-star rated lodging in one of five cedar chalets on the shore of Lac Geneviève (up to 6 people) or in a former lighthouse keeper's house at Pointe-Nord, right by the sea (up to 8 people), with an unlimited-mileage vehicle rental included. Days are spent exploring the Trois-Plaines cave, the cliffs of Cap Caron, the shipwrecks and lighthouses, Anticosti national park and its hiking trails, or watching bald eagles among the roughly 200 bird species recorded on the island. Brook trout fishing is offered through a daily draw, with spinning or fly gear depending on the water. The main camp sits 30 minutes (32 km) from Port-Menier.

Access : By boat · By road

Anticosti Island, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence: the island is reached by air or by boat depending on the navigation season. The main Lac Geneviève camp is 30 minutes (32 km) from Port-Menier and from the airport. For American- or European-plan hunts the outfitter organizes a charter flight departing from Mont-Joli; it is not included in the package and is booked at the same time as the stay. Baggage limit on that flight: 70 lb maximum per person out of both Mont-Joli and Port-Menier, including personal effects, firearm and carry-on, plus one cooler per party and the boxes of quartered game; avoid plastic bins. Because it is a charter, no tickets are issued and the departure time appears on the booking confirmation. Rustic-plan hunters may, from June onward, take that same flight subject to seat availability. In summer, scheduled air service runs Sunday to Friday from Montreal, Quebec City, Baie-Comeau, Sept-Îles and Havre-Saint-Pierre, booked by the traveller (PAAR fare program applies). The sea crossing is on the Bella Desgagnés (Relais Nordik), also booked by the traveller. On the island every road is gravel and many are narrow and winding: drive slowly and keep right, as meeting another vehicle or a deer is always possible. The Trans-Anticosti, the main road crossing the island from west to east, is marked with kilometre posts every two kilometres, numbering upward toward the east. There is no cellular network on the island. Vacation packages include an unlimited-mileage vehicle rental (insurance extra) and guided hunting packages include all ground transport.
