Pourvoirie Musquanousse

Pourvoirie Musquanousse — Algonquin for 'little bear' — is a salmonid paradise on Quebec's Basse-Côte-Nord, set amid an endless network of waterways in zone 19. Its one-of-a-kind salmon river strings together several river stretches and a chain of lakes over 28 km (fly-fishing only on the river, with 8 trail-accessed pools along 8 km from the sea). Five salmonid species swim here — a combination unique in Quebec: Atlantic salmon, sea trout, landlocked salmon (ouananiche), arctic char and brook trout. The head lake, with 100 km of shoreline, drains into six more lakes linked by the river down to the sea; 14 recent fibreglass boats (14 to 16 ft) with new 9.9 to 25 hp motors range across the whole territory. Lodging is at the log lodge (American plan, capacity 8 in double occupancy, gourmet meals by chef Mélanie Racicot) or in a remote self-catered cabin on the large lake (capacity 6). Reachable only by floatplane from Natashquan, the site caps its bookings at about 100 guests a year to keep the territory free of fishing pressure. Acquired in 1960, the outfitter has been run since 2019 by Mr. Desjardins — over 40 years of guided-fishing experience — and Ms. Racicot.
