About

La Réserve Beauchêne is an exclusive 205.7 km² (over 50,000 acre) territory tucked into the high hills of north-western Quebec, looking out over the Ottawa River valley. You fish some forty lakes holding seven game-fish species — smallmouth bass, brook trout, lake trout, splake, walleye, northern pike and whitefish — including eighteen back lakes you can reserve for the day and have to yourself. Lodging ranges from the White House, the columned colonial-style main lodge built in 1924 on the shore of Lac Beauchêne, to the four log cabins around it, the red-cedar Luxury Bird Chalets with granite fireplaces and private docks, three outpost camps (Birch Lake, Foley Bay Island, Beauchêne Beach) and a rustic five-site campground at Bear Bay. Two formulas to choose from: the American Plan, with meals in the licensed dining room and maid service included, or the European Plan, where you cook for yourself in a fully equipped camp. Fall brings moose hunting on a private assigned sector and small-game hunting; spring brings black bear hunting over baited sites. Add hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking on an 'around the world' route, birding, sand beaches and a meeting room for groups. Beauchêne was one of the first outfitters in Quebec to champion catch-and-release fishing.

Access : By road · By boat

Drive-to territory in north-western Quebec: a single bridge crossing separates the reserve from the Ontario border and the Ottawa River is a few kilometres away. GPS coordinates of the main site: N46 40.741' / W78 59.312'. Concrete boat ramp at the main lodge (mandatory zebra-mussel decontamination, $60 per stay). Outpost camps: the Birch Lake camp is reached by 4×4 or equivalent — round-trip road transport in a lodge vehicle is available for $80 — the Foley Bay Island camp is reached by boat, and the Beauchêne Beach camp by boat from the Bear Bay Campground. The Bear Bay Campground sits about 35 km from Temiscaming, on the north side of Bear Bay, and is reached by automobile by way of the Maniwaki road; an access map is provided with the reservation confirmation. Back lakes marked with an asterisk on the lake list are reachable by regular automobile; the others are reached by 4×4, by boat or by marked trails, and road transport in a lodge vehicle can be arranged for an extra charge.
