About

Founded in 1945 by Carmelle Daury on the shores of Lac Carmel, Kan-à-Mouche is one of the oldest outfitters in the Saint-Michel-des-Saints area of Lanaudière. Authentic, warm and unpretentious, it has kept the character of the 1950s, when it welcomed Duplessis, the Kennedys, Marilyn Monroe, Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Tucked among century-old spruce and pines, it offers 9 log cabins with one to five bedrooms — some right on the water, with a wood stove or a large stone fireplace — and 5 rooms in a forest motel about 50 metres from the lake. Lac Carmel is a private lake with a 2.3 km shoreline and a maximum depth of 30 metres, fed by natural springs and stocked regularly with brook trout and rainbow trout: the daily limit is 8 trout, a rowboat is provided and only electric motors are allowed. In summer you fish, canoe, swim and watch ospreys and loons; hiking and interpretation trails reveal the flora and the views all around the lake. In winter it is snowshoeing, ice fishing and inner-tube sliding under the stars, with the occasional northern lights thrown in.

Access : By road

Year-round road access. The site sits on Lac Carmel, 5 km before the village of Saint-Michel-des-Saints, in Lanaudière. Take Route 131 North and continue 12 km past the Saint-Zénon church, then follow a 1 km private road to the outfitter. Coming east on Highway 40: exit 122 (Joliette), Route 31 North toward Joliette, then Route 131 North toward Saint-Michel-des-Saints. Coming west on Highway 40: exit 144 (Berthierville), Route 158 West for a few kilometres to Route 345 North, then follow the 345 to Saint-Félix-de-Valois and take Route 131 North. GPS coordinates: 46° 38′ 33.9″ N, 73° 53′ 54.4″ W (the site publishes these with the 'latitude' and 'longitude' labels swapped). Free on-site parking. Visitors not lodging on site must be approved by management and are admitted only between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., for $10 per visitor.
