The Tunulik II fishing camp sits on a granite bluff overlooking the Lagrevé River, 2.4 km inland from Ungava Bay, in Nunavik. The river is reserved exclusively for six or seven anglers: roughly sixteen kilometres of water dotted with pools to discover — 3.2 km downstream of camp and 11 km upstream. Fly Fisherman magazine ranks it among 'the world's five best brook-trout waters'. You fish native and sea-run brook trout of about three kilos, Arctic char of about nine kilos late in the season, and the occasional Atlantic salmon. Rarely more than thirty metres wide and 60 to 90 centimetres deep, the river can be waded almost everywhere and fished on the fly: sinking lines with Magog Smelt, Grey Ghost or Mickey Finn streamers, and dry-fly fishing during the hatch. For every group of three anglers, an Inuit guide and his freighter canoe with a 22 hp Mercury jet outboard come along, and the camp's live-release policy keeps trophy-sized brookies plentiful. The camp opens just four weeks a year, at the peak of the migration, from mid-August to mid-September: three heated cabins sleeping two to three anglers each, plus a separate main cabin holding the kitchen and dining room, showers, flush toilets, a generator, freezers and satellite telephone.
