Pourvoirie Whale River

Founded in 1967, the Pourvoirie Whale River camp is a family-owned and operated outfit set on Standora Island, at the junction of the Whale River and the Wheeler River, at the 57th latitude in Nunavik. The river rises at Lake Ninawawe and flows north into Ungava Bay: quick-flowing and wide, it offers the perfect combination for Atlantic salmon fishing. Whale River Outfitters is the only operating outfitter on the river system — so the river is yours, with no unwanted anglers. Salmon average 8–10 lbs with fish in the 15–20 lb range caught frequently; during the peak run an experienced angler can hook anywhere from 2 to 5 salmon a day, and inexperienced anglers learn the sport easily. A day of fishing breaks down into two options: the lower river, surrounding camp, made up of slower pools that are easily fished from shore or by boat, and the upper river, whose fast-moving rapids add a unique challenge — a salmon can take you 100 yards down the rapids in the blink of an eye. The established pools are contained within roughly a ten-mile stretch; beyond it lie miles and miles of salmon pools yet to be discovered. Lodging is in comfortable single- or double-bed cabins built from native black spruce. No wireless internet, no TV, no electricity: only fishing and the good times shared with your fellow anglers. August is the peak of the season.
