In the heart of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Lac Camachigama is a 26 km² remote wilderness lake on the greater Camachigama river waterway, long known as one of Quebec's premier walleye fisheries: trophy yellow and blue walleye, sauger, northern pike and even lake sturgeon, from naturally reproducing populations. The main camp sits on Grosse Île in the middle of the lake: twelve cabins with electricity, hot and cold running water, a shower, a wood stove and a fridge, plus free WiFi at the main lodge. You drive to the landing, then ride the barge across — about fifteen minutes on the water. The first log fishing camps were built in the 1950s by then-Premier Maurice Duplessis and still stand on the island today. A fishery management plan governs the catch to keep the lake at its best. For hunters, moose is hunted from seven drive-to outpost camps, each with its own exclusive territory of 15 to 20 km², established stands and salt licks — self-guided or fully guided. A family-run place, where guests often arrive as strangers and leave as part of the family.

Access : By road · By boat
Road access to the landing, then an approximately 15-minute barge crossing to the camps on Grosse Île, in the middle of Lac Camachigama. From the south: follow Route 117 north toward Val-d'Or; at km 374 turn right onto Route 29, just after the truck rest lane; take Route 29 to km 48 and turn left following the 'Kelog' and/or 'Grand Chelem' signs (no need to stop at the zec office); stay on that road for about 38 km until it meets the Chimo road at km 124 (sign for 'Eastern Canadian Outfitters – Camachigama', burnt-out vehicle on your left); turn right on the Chimo road and travel to km 143, then turn right (sign); cross two bridges keeping right; travel about 14 km, then turn left toward the landing; 2 km to the landing. From the north: travel through Val-d'Or and continue south on the 117 to Louvicourt, then just south of Lac Simon turn left onto the Chimo road at km 471 and follow it to km 143. Fill up with gas before leaving the 117 (Grand-Remous, Maniwaki or Louvicourt). You must call the lodge when you leave Route 117 so the barge can meet you at the landing — allow about two hours. Do not follow Google Maps — some bridges are out. Hunting outpost camps are drive-to. Pack gear in waterproof bags for the boat ride. Waste disposal site at km 4 on the Chimo road.
