Sasseginaga Outpost is a remote, family-run fishing camp set on the shores of Lake Sasseginaga, in the ZEC Kipawa region of western Quebec. Only one road leads to the lake, some fifty miles of it gravel: that tough access is what keeps fishing pressure to a minimum and the lake in excellent health. About 12 miles long and more than 2 miles wide, the lake is dotted with many islands (the literal translation of 'Sasseginaga') and broken up by rocky shoals, sunken humps and points where fish gather in the evening. You fish walleye — protected by slot limits — along with northern pike and lake trout; fish over 24 inches are common and trophy walleye over 28 inches are caught every season. Lodging is in five self-catering cabins (European plan) sleeping up to eight guests each: cabins 1 and 4 at the main camp, cabin 5 about a mile away, and cabins 6 and 7 six to seven miles further up the lake for complete solitude. Plain but clean and functional, they come with an indoor toilet, hot water, fridge-freezer, woodstove, propane grill and a full set of cookware. Every package includes a boat with a 9.9hp motor and the first tank of gas for every two adults, plus the ZEC permit. In spring, from mid-May through June, the camp also offers black bear hunting over baited sites, and in fall moose hunting (bow, rifle, muzzleloader), both in limited numbers to protect the populations. A genuine off-grid experience on the Canadian Shield, where loons and the occasional moose share water with almost no traffic.
